Arch bridges
1. Overview
Arch bridges are an ancient form of bridge which has been constructed since the days of the Roman Empire.
Mechanically speaking, this is an extremely rational structural form which effectively capitalizes on concrete’s characteristic strength under compressive force due to the fact that, when under a load, the axis of the arch shifts in the direction of the pressure line, thus the main sectional force becomes compressive force.
Arch bridges are used when the horizontal force of the arch can be supported by solidly supportive ground, and it is structural form that is extremely pleasing aesthetically.
